The Chargers won their first game of the season, defeating the Las Vegas Raiders 24-19. In the win, Justin Herbert completed 26 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns, while Khalil Mack recorded three sacks in his Los Angeles debut.

The Chiefs also had a successful start to the season, defeating the Arizona Cardinals 44-21. Patrick Mahomes demonstrated that he does not require Tyreek Hill to be effective, completing five touchdown passes to four different teammates.

Last week, the Chargers and Chiefs appeared to be the top teams in the AFC West. Mahomes and Herbert are on completely different levels, and it would not be surprising if both gunslingers attempted to outdo each other on Thursday night.

Fans were concerned about Mahomes’ ability to be productive without Hill, but he plainly demonstrated that this is not the case. He completed eight throws for 121 yards and a touchdown to Travis Kelce. Mahomes even got along with offseason acquisition JuJu Smith-Schuster, who had 79 yards on six receptions.

Most importantly, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire shown that he can contribute to the passing game. The third-year runner has three receptions, two for touchdowns.

Even Kansas City’s defense looked better this year than it did last. The Cardinals have offensive promise, but the Chiefs limited them to only seven points and 282 total yards through three quarters.

Last week, the Chargers offense looked strong as well, generating 355 total yards. However, the running game must improve. Starting running back Austin Ekeler only averaged 2.6 yards per carry on 14 attempts, which is surprising given that he had averaged 5.2 yards per carry in eight career games versus Kansas City.

Unfortunately, the Chargers’ offense could be depleted in Week 2. Keenan Allen, the team’s No. 1 wide receiver, had a hamstring injury last week and it’s unknown whether he’ll play due to the short turnaround.

If the offense is depleted, the Chargers’ defense must do everything it can to slow Mahomes down. Players like Mack and Joey Bosa will need to go through the Chiefs’ offensive line early and frequently, while defensive backs Asante Samuel Jr. and Derwin James will need to shut down the opposing pass-catchers.

Thursday Night Football games can be entertaining, so expect Mahomes and Herbert to put on a show. At the end of the day, I believe the Chiefs will win a shootout because they are healthier than their AFC West competitors.

Aside from selecting the Chiefs as 3.5-point favorites, taking the over on the total is a good option. Since Herbert was drafted, the average total in Chargers-Chiefs games has been 57 points.
